Sometimes when we meet a kindred maker, there’s a spark of connection that becomes an enduring creative friendship. Two such sparks have led to co-designed Heath dinnerware lines—Alabama Chanin and Chez Panisse—and now it is our pleasure to reveal a new one. In partnership with the incomparable California design studio Commune, we introduce the Commune for Heath Dinnerware Collection.
If you don’t know the LA-based Commune by name, you know them by sight. They are the creative engine behind Heath’s own showrooms, Tartine Manufactory, Ace Hotels, and residences that exude the easy attitude and natural beauty of California living. The light, the colors, and the materials they choose for their interiors are distinct but never too delicate, meant to be used and fully lived in.
We’ve been lucky to know and work with Commune for over 15 years on a variety of projects big and small—all of them tied together by our shared connection to California. Our latest collaboration might be the most exciting yet: a dinnerware collection that adds new dimension to Heath’s iconic Rim Line.
This line is about our long friendship with Heath, and our community of people who share a point-of-view and a love of craft. That’s really what this collection is rooted in.
The new pieces are designed using the original Heath Rim line shapes, modernized by fully glazing the wide rim in a neutral palette inspired by Heath tile glazes. The shapes were chosen for their versatility—functioning beautifully on their own, or mixing readily with shapes and glazes from across Heath’s dinnerware lines.
The collection is a foundation that can be built upon in many directions and used every day. Nothing is too precious to pull off the shelf. Lay a big platter down outside for family dinner. Eat a salad for one from a deep serving bowl. No pretense, all pleasure.

Everything we do, we do as a response to our lives. Heath is the same. We create things that respond to our needs. We have to believe in it and we have to use it if we are going to make it.
To accompany the dinnerware, Commune also designed a small selection of linens and glassware in collaboration with other makers, all of which bring that same casual comfort to the table. “It’s important with anything we do that it reflects our connection to California because that’s where we’re from,” says Roman, “If we’re going to send it out to the world, it should feel like us, like our place.”
