As America’s more than 30 million small businesses grapple with the effects of the global coronavirus pandemic, Forbes’ fifth annual Small Giants list highlights 25 privately owned companies whose commitment to greatness over fast growth has enabled them to best serve their customers, employees and communities, all while maintaining profitability. They include a national fitness bootcamp, a chain of Mexican bakeries and a vineyard with 100-year-old roots in Chile’s Casablanca Valley.

When designers Robin Petravic and Catherine Bailey bought Heath Ceramics from the Heath Trust in 2003, the business had been struggling for years. What started as a small pottery business in 1948 had veered into wholesale, and the new owners wanted to get back to basics, selling direct-to-consumer through retail showrooms. They also wanted to keep every single employee, some of whom had worked at Heath for 50 years. The duo succeeded on all counts. Today, Petravic and Bailey have four showrooms—three in San Francisco and one in Los Angeles—as well as an online business. All products are still manufactured in California factories.
