Introducing Summer Seasonal 2023

Experimentation is at the heart of Heath’s craft. Since 1948, we’ve been finding our way forward by letting ourselves follow new paths. In this anniversary year, Summer Seasonal represents not only our most recent discoveries, but our historic ones, too. The collection brings archival Heath techniques to life in the present, connecting 75 years of design through glaze, form, and fire.

At its center, the collection features the Landscape special technique, inspired by a glazing process that Edith Heath originally developed in the 1970s, while playing with pouring glaze onto second-quality plates. The resulting freeform layers evoke a distant view, like looking out at far-off hills or an ocean horizon.

Digging into original Heath work from the past is my favorite way to get inspired. The Landscape technique’s particular beauty comes from the melding of the glazes’ movement and the glazer’s movement, flowing together.

The rest of the seasonal palette echoes the soft focus and filtered light of a landscape view, with gently diffused yellows and greens—Lemon Rind, Barley, and Avocado; and a penetrating sky-blue Cyan.

These special collections give us the opportunity to collaborate with our extended community of fellow makers, working together to develop design concepts and palettes that complement the ceramics. This year, Studiopatro created a custom textile print; Swan’s Island designed a digital pattern for woven blankets, House Industries printed our glaze names onto tea towels with lettering inspired by our tiles, and the list goes on.

And while every seasonal project is special in its own way, this year has particular significance, as part of our milestone 75th anniversary year. The new collection represents the artistry, experimentation, and unconventional approach that have defined Heath dating all the way back to 1948.
