McKinley's Seaview Bungalow

Each time the designers at Studio Robert McKinley share a new project, we think maybe we’ve seen the extent of their creativity with tile. But then another one comes along and proves us wrong. McKinley’s latest house features three bathroom installations that are unified in concept (stripes!), yet beautifully varied in tone and feel.

Robert doesn’t take shape, size, color as direct cues—he also considers how grout spacing, and mixed sizes and colors can come into play, and yet it’s a very sophisticated, subtle design aesthetic.

The walls of each bathroom are composed of several different glazes within the same color family in a combination of squares and rectangles, to create a striping effect that benefits from the natural variation present in each tile.

Many of the glazes featured in the Seaview house are new additions to the Heath Tile palette, designed as part of our transition to an all-manganese clay body for our tile. That earthy foundation creates a unifying undertone that holds the design together, even as the glaze shades shift.

The Seaview house is the latest addition to the McKinley Bungalows—a collection of five homes (and growing) in the beachside town of Montauk. We’ll be featuring their next one before long.
